Winterwanderweg Gangolfsberg - Oberelsbach - Rhön
Winter hiking
This winter hiking trail runs largely through the wonderfully snow-covered Rhön Forest.
moderate
Distance 8.5 km
We start our tour on Gangolfsberg and hike along the edge of the snow-covered natural forest reserve in the direction of Ilmenberg. Surrounded by dense winter forest, the path leads us to the Thüringer Hütte. Particularly interesting: the winter hiking trail runs from there partly parallel to the Franziskusweg. It continues past the abandoned village of Altenfeld to the Rhön Park Hotel. To get to our starting point, we return on the snow-covered path.
There are places to stop and warm up in the Schweinfurter Haus and the Thüringer Hütte.
Author’s recommendation
The rare wildcat is native to the Gangolfsberg. There is a lot to discover about the shy animal on the information boards.

The tourist paths of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, horse riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. Of course, the same applies to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, nature sports should therefore only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
Tips and hints
- The snow hotline provides information about the winter conditions in the Rhön.
- Good to know: The nature trail on the Gangolfsberg may not be entered on snow or ice.
