Winter hiking
This winter hiking trail runs on the Hohe Rhön in the direction of the former inner-German border.
easy
Distance 4.9 km
The winter hiking trail combines a breathtaking snowy landscape with historical relics from German history. The tour takes us to the former German-German border, where the remains of the former GDR border system are located. Further along the Green Belt, the route runs through the open winter landscape, accompanied by a breathtaking view of the Rhön. Finally, we walk back to the starting point along small wooded areas.
The Gasthof Sennhütte and the nearby kiosk on the Black Moor offer delicious regional food and warm drinks for refreshment.
The Black Moor winter hiking trail network consists of two circular hiking trails that can be combined with each other. There is also a connection to the Thuringian Rhön, where there are also places to stop in Birx with the Landgasthof Rhönstübchen and the Flechsenberger Hof.
Author’s recommendation
There is another remnant of German history to see, especially for those interested in history: the stone archway, remains of the former Reich labor service camp on the Hohe Rhön, is located opposite the information point on the Black Moor. Attention: You have to cross the street here.

The tourist paths of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, horse riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. Of course, the same applies to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, nature sports should therefore only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
Tips and hints
- The amount of snow can be estimated with the help of the webcam on the Black Moor.
- The snow hotline provides information about the winter conditions in the Rhön.
- Good to know: The nature trail through the Black Moor and the observation tower are closed in the winter months.
