The mountain bike circuit 7 Hegkopfrunde starts in the beautiful village of Unterleichtersbach. Starting from the hiking car park opposite the Aspenmühle. From there the path leads through the original valley of the Schondra River, where there are numerous species of flora and fauna that are worth protecting. For this reason, part of it was placed under special protection in 1983 - in the "Untere Schondra" nature reserve.

Along the course of the river you will come across numerous old mills on the tour. These accompany us especially during the first half of the tour.

In the second section of the tour, the path changes from the river valley to a forest area. This leads to the hilltop of the Hegkopf and the local Hegkopfsee. The basalt lake was created from a former basalt quarry, which is now filled with water. In the beautiful biotope you will find beautiful water lilies, especially in June.

Shortly behind the mountain lake you leave the forest and you have an impressive view of the surrounding villages. Now it is soon done and the starting point is reached again. The legs can then be cooled directly in the water treading pool there.

Author’s recommendation

Crossing the Schondra over stepping stones not far from the Heckmühle is a special experience.

Safety information

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.)

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies, of course, to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.

  • In the Rhön, the paths are shared. With mutual consideration, nobody has to be angry;
  • Stay on trails and paths. Please don`t leave those.
  • Take your memory and your rubbish with you!
  • Never drive faster than you can stop.
  • At night (and in winter) the forest belongs to the animals.

We recommend that you only ride the mountain bike trails in the summer season (May-October).
