From the moor meadow through the Kesselrain nature reserve and over the Lange Rhön nature reserve, past the Heidelstein, back to the starting point.

On this hike you pass the former village of "Rothenmoor". In 1545 farmers settled there, after all there were over twenty buildings that made up the village of Rothenmoor. Around the middle of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), the Swedes and their allies settled in the Rhön after the Battle of Nördlingen. In 1634 the village of Rothenmoor was burned down, the farmers left the village and resettled. You can still see the remains of the village fountain today.

On the 926 high Heidelstein there is also a transmission mast, which was built in 1969. The total height is about 218 m. The transmission mast is not accessible.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the edge of the large moor meadow, left along the edge of the forest, you reach the Moorwiese refuge and continue right to the Ulster spring and through the Kesselrain nature reserve to the Schornhecke car park. From there you hike up a meadow path to the Rhön Club memorial, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Lange Rhön nature reserve. We continue over the Heidelstein, past the transmitter mast, back to the "Moorwiese car park". Then the path leads to the former village of the village "Rothenmoor", which was abandoned in the Thirty Years War (explanatory board and the rest of the village fountain) and further back to the starting point at the Moorwiese car park.

Public transport

Unfortunately, there is no possibility of arriving by public transport on this hiking trail.

Getting there

The Moordorf car park near Ehrenberg-Wüstensachsen can be reached via the A7, A66 and A71.

In the Hilders district of Batten, turn right towards Ehrenberg-Wüstensachen. In Wüstensachsen, continue on the B278 in the direction of Bischofsheim and reach the Moordorf car park (left side).

Leave the A66 at Kreuz 53 Fulda-Süd and take the B27 in the direction of Bad Brückenau. Just a short distance later, in Döllbach, turn left onto the B279 in the direction of Gersfeld. In Gersfeld, turn left towards Ehrenberg-Wüstensachsen. Before reaching Wüstensachsen, turn right in the direction of Bischofsheim (Rhön) and you will reach the Moordorf car park.
