Starting from the Holzberghof hiking car park, the hiking trail leads us via the inn of the same name into the valley of the Scharzbach. Only a short time later, the Teufelsmühle. The small waterfall is legendary. There, a clever man is said to have cheated the devil. The whole story can be read on a Rhönklub information board that was placed there.

The path then leads us to the Rothsee. This is not a natural lake, but a former quarry that filled with water after it was closed. Today the Rothsee is an attractive place for guests and locals alike.

Passing another basalt quarry on the Bauersberg, we now walk through a mixed deciduous forest up to the "Lange Rhön" nature reserve. The open plateaus were created through their cultivation a special natural space. This barren landscape has become home to many species of animals and plants that are under nature protection.

Now the path leads us back to the starting point of the tour, the Holzberghof hiking car park, via a land defense.

Safety information

The tourist paths of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, horse riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. Of course, the same applies to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, nature sports should therefore only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
