The Rhön is unique - especially here on the meadows of the Hochrhön - in the midst of ancient hat beeches and mysterious moors. This tour leads, among other things, on a wooden plank path through the Red Moor. Numerous information boards provide information about the special features of this unique habitat. The observation tower in the Red Moor offers an impressive view of the Red Moor with its moor pond.

Safety information

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active outdoor sports enthusiasts to be considerate of each other. The same applies, of course, to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.

Turn-by-turn directions

This circular moor path leads past the remains of the village "Rothenmoor" to the Moorwiese car park. After crossing the federal road 278, hike along a forest path and along a narrow hiking path past the young cattle pasture on the Mathesberg. Here young cattle graze on the heights of the Mathesberg in the spring and summer months. On the forest path to the left, you hike through the Grumbach Valley and along a hiking path uphill to the saddle between the Wasserkuppe and the Rotes Moor. From here you can take the "old Reichsstraße" to the observation tower in the Red Moor. The wooden plank path with many information boards takes you to the moor pond and after approx. 300 m you reach the Moordorf car park again.

Public transport

Unfortunately, the hiking trail cannot be reached by public transport.

Getting there

The Rote Moor / Moordorf car park is accessible via the A7 and A71.

If you come to the hike on the A7, leave the autobahn at exit 92 Fulda-Mitte and drive in the direction of Hilders. In the Hilders district of Batten, turn right towards Ehrenberg-Wüstensachen and continue towards Bischofsheim (Rhön). About halfway to Bischofsheim is the Moordorf car park on the left.

If you use the A71 to get here, you leave it at the Bad Neustadt exit. Here you drive on the B279 in the direction of Bischofsheim. At Bischofsheim you turn onto the B278 in the direction of Ehrenberg (Rhön). Halfway to Ehrenberg is the Moordorf car park on the right.
