With a size of approx. 50 hectares, the Rotes Moor is the second largest moor in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Peat was extracted here until 1984. A wooden plank path leads through the Rote Moor, the entire circular route is approx. 3 km long. Numerous display boards inform the visitor about interesting facts about this extraordinary ecosystem.

Author’s recommendation

From the observation tower you have a great view of the entire moor.

Safety information

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.)

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies, of course, to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Moordorf car park, cross federal road 278 and after approx. 300 m you will reach the moor pond in the Rotes Moor nature reserve. The wooden plank path - a moor nature trail with numerous information boards - leads through the red moor to the observation tower. From here you can enjoy the wonderful view over the entire moor. The old Reichsstraße leads to the barbecue area with a refuge and further back to the Moordorf car park.

Public transport

Unfortunately, the hiking trail cannot be reached by public transport.

Getting there

The Rote Moor / Moordorf car park is accessible via the A7 and A71.

If you come to the hike on the A7, leave the autobahn at exit 92 Fulda-Mitte and drive in the direction of Hilders. In the Hilders district of Batten, turn right towards Ehrenberg-Wüstensachen and continue towards Bischofsheim (Rhön). About halfway to Bischofsheim is the Moordorf car park on the left.

If you use the A71 to get here, you leave it at the Bad Neustadt exit. Here you drive on the B279 in the direction of Bischofsheim. At Bischofsheim you turn onto the B278 in the direction of Ehrenberg (Rhön). Halfway to Ehrenberg is the Moordorf car park on the right.
