This hike leads from Thaiden to the Billstein refuge and the Billstein viewing platform. From here you have a first-rate view of the basalt works on the Billstein. During the week you can watch the big machines mining and loading the basalt.

The Billstein refuge invites you to take a break. At the viewing platform on the Billstein you can get an impression of how basalt is mined. As early as 1912, the entrepreneur Franz Carl Nüdling bought land around the Billstein because he had learned of a large basalt deposit above the Ulstertal. Steinbruck am Billstein has been wholly owned by Nüdling since 1934. Anyone who wants to get an idea of the beginnings of basalt mining to the present day should visit the FCN Museum in Seiferts

Author’s recommendation

Visit to the viewing platform on Billstein and the museum of the Franz Carl Nüdling (FCN) company.

Safety information

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active outdoor sports enthusiasts to be considerate of each other. The same applies, of course, to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the village community center, the path runs along the main road and basalt road to the Billstein refuge (great vantage point with relaxation benches). It is worth making a detour to the Billstein viewing platform and stopping off at Birx on circular route 4 (2 km one way). 100 m above the refuge, turn right, along the edge of the forest to the Birxgraben, after crossing the Birxbach there is a detour to the Rhönklubhütte Seiferts with a nice resting place. A narrow hiking trail leads along the Birxbach to Seiferts. After crossing the main road to the left, turn right into Marienstraße. Passing the Kneipp basin and the statue of the Virgin Mary, you get to Thaiden on the Ulstertal Cycle Path. In the center of the village (after the church), turn right over Kirchstraße to the main road and right back to the starting point, the parking lot at the village community center.
