On the hike you walk around the Wachtküppell. Many Rhön people like to call the mountain "Spitzbub" of the Rhön.

The Wachtküppel - also called Lausbub or Spitzbub der Rhön - is 705 m above sea level. NN, in the heart of the Hessian Rhön. Below the mountain is the Wendelinus Chapel on the Wachtküppel.

The circular path leads past the foot of the Wachtküppel and towards Poppenhausen. The small circular path leads to the mountain Kühlküppel (573m), from where you can enjoy a great view of Poppenhausen.

Anyone planning the detour to the Wachtpippel should only do it without dogs. The stake lies in a fenced goat pasture.

Safety information

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies, of course, to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.

Public transport

The Maiersbach, Rhönakademie bus stop is right next to the start of the circular hiking trail. The following bus line of the LNG-Fulda runs there:
  • Line 37: Poppenhausen - Gersfeld - Wasserkuppe - Wüstensachsen

Getting there

The starting point of the hike can be reached via the A7 / A66.

From the A7 you drive onto the A66 at the Autobahn triangle 93 Fulda.

Leave the A66 at exit 54 Eichenzell and take the L3307 in the direction of Rönshausen and follow it to Weyhers. In the village you have to turn right and then left in quick succession, so that you are on the way in the direction of Poppenhausen. A short time later you turn right in Altenmühle towards Ebersburg / Maiersbach. The hiking car park is on the right-hand side of the road on this route.
