Once upon a time, a long, long time ago there was a legend trail that tells of the legends from the fairytale villages of Kranlucken and Zitters in the distant Rhön region.

We start the legend trail in Kranlucken, just a few steps from the tourist station. The first legend is depicted on a village fountain in the Catholic Church. The fountains and cattle troughs were popular meeting places in ancient times to share stories. "The Witch's Revenge" is depicted on a wall relief. From there we walk a long hike above Kranlucken, go through the fruit tree groves and along the “wood path”. In the direction of Roßberg, the second legend can be discovered along the way: “The French soldier”. A historical wayside shrine can be seen here as a reminder. We walk to Zitters, where there is an unusually designed village fountain on the right. In the interplay of different elements - wood, metal, stone and water - the story of the shepherd and the wolf is presented. From Zitters it goes back towards Kranlucken through an idyllic forest area along the Kohlbachtal. Here you get to the fourth station "The Firemen". Inspired by a legend by Ludwig Wucke, the sculptor Dr. Ulrich Barnickel an unusual, larger-than-life metal figure and other elements. After a small quarry we reach the starting point in Kranlucken again.

Author’s recommendation

Beautiful half-timbered houses and colorful gardens in the center of Kranlucken and Schleid sweeten the circular hike. The legend trail is also very suitable for families with children.

Safety information

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies of course to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
