Vacha, the so-called gate of the Rhön, is an insider tip for friends of ancient places with lovingly restored half-timbered houses. The legend of the "Vietche im Töpfche" aka "Vietche in the potty" takes place here.

The "Vietche im Töpfche" was a night watchman from Vacha, who spied out the enemy when the city was besieged. However, he was discovered and thrown into a pot of boiling oil as a punishment. Saint Vitus, who himself died this way at the age of 12, held his hand over him protectively so that the night watchman survived this incident and Vitus became the patron saint of the city.

We start the family hiking trail at the historic market square, which has been preserved like the town hall and the Vitus fountain from 1613. We walk towards the Protestant church and Wendelstein Castle, which houses a museum with a doll exhibition. Around 2,000 dolls inspire not only little girls with their diversity of origins, age and material. After the castle we reach the stone Werra bridge with 14 arches on which there is a former border tower. We walk over the city moat and the Werner-Selenbinder-Weg to the swimming pool. Through the Öchsetal we walk up a short steep ascent from the Öchsebrücke to the “Waldschlößchen” and the St. Annen ruins. Time for a break? How practical that a rest area with seating and 2 large loungers is set up here. Afterwards we walk to the monastery church and back to the market square in Vacha.

Author’s recommendation

The detour along the Öchse to the ruins of Sankt Annen should definitely be planned for hiking. For children, playing at the Kläschenbrunnen is a real highlight.

Safety information

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies of course to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
