Located between the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön on the castle hill of Breitungen, the visitor does not expect the dusty splendor of bygone times. The active museum and the "TAT-ORT-KLOSTER" exhibition are only one part of the lively Herrenbreitungen Palace. To the southeast in Herrenbreitungen is the cemetery parking lot, where the family-friendly hiking trail begins. We walk across the Borntal and pass orchards, old stands of deciduous trees and areas of wild herbs. Halfway in the direction of the ascent to the Vogelsberg is the first opportunity to take a leisurely break: a seating group and lounger as well as the particularly peaceful view over the central Werra valley to the Rhön invite you to linger. To keep walking is worth it, because with view of the Thuringian Forest and the beautiful Trusetal, we walk to the vantage point on Vogelsberg. There is a fantastic panoramic view with another seating area and a family lounger! Anyone who has had enough or has eaten all the provisions can now walk back down the valley on the Breiter Rennsteig. We walk past fields, an orchard meadow and a clay pit and reach the chicken garden, where the “garden of art” with sandstone sculptures is on display. The next highlights are the castle with the Michaelskirche and finally the Romanesque basilica. From there it is only a few meters to the starting point, the parking lot Friedhof Herrenbreitungen.
Animal and nature lovers can go looking for sparrows on the Breiter Rennsteig.
The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).
We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies of course to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
The family-friendly hiking trail begins southeast of the Breiter Castle with a stele and a hiking board.
The trail follows the Borntal along orchards, old treees and herb plains up the Vogelsberg (360m). Halfway there is a seating group and a lounger for a rest. The location offers an excellent view of the central Werra Valley as far as the Rhön, and continues with a view of the Thuringian Forest and the beautiful Trusetal to the Vogelsberg vantage point. A fantastic panorama opens up here. Another seating group and a family lounger are ideal places to rest.
The path continues downhill on the Breiter Rennsteig past fields, an orchard and a clay pit. Via the Hühngarten with its “Garden of Art” we continue to the castle and the Romanesque basilica.
