Old hut beeches on spacious mountain meadows and extensive limestone grasslands - the Vorderrhönweg leads through a lesser-known but exceptional cultural landscape in the Rhön.

From Hümpfershausen we hike over the Gotteskopf to the Hümpfershausen hut. Ancient, impressive beeches frame the sweeping panorama of the Thuringian Forest on the horizon. We walk over the Hahnberg through natural deciduous forests and wide meadows to the Amönenhof. Let's take a little time for a little detour to the clock tower! The time was not invented here, but was measured with tower clocks up to 200 years old. Then we come to the village of Oepfershausen, where an art station combines creativity and nature. An extensive creative program is offered here in spacious workshops. In addition, the so-called "Black Castle" from the 18th century, formerly part of the Aueroch's Castle, has been extensively restored and reconstructed. We continue through the idyllic village of Friedelshausen with its old lime tree. We walk over Glasberg through a picture book landscape with impressive limestone grasslands. The latter is the result of centuries-old grazing with sheep and goats and is home to silver thistles. These habitats are important across Europe and can only be preserved with great effort. On narrow paths we get back to the starting point in Hümpfershausen.

Author’s recommendation

A detour to the Turmuhrenklause is definitely worth the time. A selection of historical tower clocks is shown here. The art station in Oepfershausen is also a great workshop for creative people of all ages.

Safety information

  • Crossing the K83 (between Kaltenlengsfeld and Oepfershausen)
  • Crossing the L2618 (Friedelshausen)

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies of course to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
