We hike into the Schwarzen Berge on the Hüttentour. The Tintenfass lays on the way and neighing can also be heard.

From the biosphere center "Haus der Schwarzen Berge" we walk through the romantic village. We continue to hike towards Eckartsroth with a junction to Riedenberg. Our path leads us through forest and meadows above the Große Sinn. In Riedenberg we ascend to the Farnsberg recreation area. There, the Berghaus Rhön attracts visitors with its beer garden and natural playground.

Who can find out about the mystery of the Tintenfass? We discover the secret only a few hundred meters further: It is the green shimmering jewel of the Rhön, a romantic basalt lake. And we are already heading for the next Rhönklubhütte - the Würzburger Haus with a panoramic view of the "Dammersfeldrhön".

As we descend along the cultural, landscape and hiking trail, we enjoy the beautiful landscape. Isn't there a horse neighing? In fact: We pass the Icelandic horse stud at the Ziegelhütte. We return to the "Haus der Schwarzen Berge" via the rose garden. Here we stop in the café or browse for souvenirs in the regional goods store.

Author’s recommendation

The basalt lake Tintenfass is evidence of mining on the Farnsberg. An old locomotive and the diversion station still bear witness to the basalt mining in the Rhön.

Safety information

The touristic paths of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.)

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies of course to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
