The whole family learns interesting facts about the region along the way - from water to forest, the border history or the ghosts and myths of the Rhön. The main attractions are the ARCHE RHÖN in the Rhönwald adventure world near Kaltenwestheim and the Noahs Segel viewing platform on Ellenbogen. The path is divided into four thematic stages: The first is the “Rhönwasser”. The entrance is in Unterweid with puzzles and offers in place. A detour to the Weinberg with the border tower and entrance board is worthwhile because of the view. Another five play and discovery stations or information points are along the route. The path leads over an incline on the Weidberg plateau to the Rhönwald adventure world above the village of Kaltenwestheim. The “Rhönwald” stage has the fire salamander mandra as a symbolic figure. From the adventure world Rhönwald it goes over meadows and through the Rhönwald to the Thüringer Rhönhaus on the Ellenbogen. There are a total of seven information and play and discovery stations along the way. The stage of the "Rhöngeister" runs from the Thüringer Rhönhaus in the direction of Frankenheim. On the HOCHRHÖNER hiking trail, we primarily walk through pastures and meadows with a panoramic view of the Rhön. There is an information point and four discovery objects around Frankenheim. The last stage is the "Rhön story". From Frankenheim we continue on the HOCHRHÖNER to Birx at the state triangle of the Rhön. Here was the former German-German border. The end point is at the Gerstenstein rest area.

Author’s recommendation

There is a wonderful panoramic view of the Rhön from the viewing platform with slide: Noah's Segel. As a family outing, it is best to hike in stages. You can then start at the Rhönwald Adventure World in Kaltenwestheim or at the Ellenbogen, i.e. at the Thuringian Rhönhaus.

Safety information

  • Road crossing in Unterweid
  • Road crossing in Frankenheim
  • Inform yourself about weather conditions in winter; no snow removal; sections are used as cross-country skiing trails

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies of course to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
