Cross-country skiing
The circular trail leads through the characteristic landscape of the High Rhön along forest and open fields.
Classic
difficult
Distance 23.2 km
The eventful tour begins at the Rother Kuppe and leads through winter forest on partly winding and steep sections through the natural forest reserve Eisgraben and past the legendary Frauenhöhle, a basalt natural cave. We continue to the Dreiländereck at the Lange Rhön nature reserve. A breathtaking view of the landscape is offered over the largely free plateaux of the Rhön. We continue via the Stirnberg to the Thüringer Hütte and after another short drive we reach our starting point.
The trail is particularly suitable for experienced winter sports enthusiasts due to the winding section between the Dreiländereck and the Rother Kuppe.
There are many places to stop for refreshments along the route. Gasthaus Sennhütte, Kiosk Schwarzes Moor, Thüringer Hütte, Rother Kuppe.
Author’s recommendation
Be sure to plan a visit to the information center Schwarzes Moor! There are regional products and Rhön literature.

The tourist paths of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, horse riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. Of course, the same applies to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, nature sports should therefore only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
Tips and hints
- The snow phone provides information about the winter conditions in the Rhön.
- Good to know: the nature trail through the Black Moor and the lookout tower are closed in the winter months.
